Where Can I Find a Free Notary?
The fee for notarizing documents is set by the Secretary of State, and it varies depending on the state you are in. Since we are physically located in the state of California, I will address your question as it plays out here.
You actually may have a couple of options for obtaining notary service for free:
1) Banks will often notarize their own documents at no charge for their existing customers. Be sure to check with your bank, especially if they originated the documents.
2) Your employer may offer complimentary notary services as an employee benefit. Check with your Human Resource department to see if this benefit is available.
The fees for notary services are intended to offset the cost of maintaining a notary commission, as well as mitigate some of the liability that is placed upon the notary when notarizing documents.
